Justness

BY LARRY THACKER

We watch the grapevine in its wildness
spread all the heated season, a spindling
growth being large enough finally to birth

a mind, surely, by early August
as the evening winds are regular and move
the thing as one largeness, heaped over the fence line

trees, swaying, frightening at a distance. What
has summer wrought, there across the field?
There, coming closer? Or do we only

fear what we deserve this time of year?

Larry D. Thacker is the author of Mountain Mysteries: The Mystic Traditions of Appalachia, and the poetry books,Voice Hunting, Memory Train and the forthcoming, Drifting in Awe. Elements for “Justness” came from his fascination with the determined creeping mood of nature to constantly take back from us what we think we own and control. His poetry can be found or is forthcoming in over sixty journals and magazines. Find him online at: www.larrydthacker.com
