We watch the grapevine in its wildness
spread all the heated season, a spindling
growth being large enough finally to birth
a mind, surely, by early August
as the evening winds are regular and move
the thing as one largeness, heaped over the fence line
trees, swaying, frightening at a distance. What
has summer wrought, there across the field?
There, coming closer? Or do we only
fear what we deserve this time of year?
