Three Haiku

BY MAXINE HONG KINGSTON

A poor man sleeping,
tented under a Fu Dog
in Portland, in rain.

Taking my time.  Taking time.
Take time.  Take time. Time
takes too.  Time takes me.

A spider pulls a dust ball
across the ceiling.
No.  It’s its shadow.

Maxine Hong Kingston is the author of The Woman Warrior, China MenThe Fifth Book of Peace, and the long poem, “I Love a Broad Margin to My Life,” among other works. She received the National Humanities Medal from President Clinton and the National Medal of Arts from President Obama.
