After The Storm

Midwife

BY AVIVA KASOWSKI

I won’t tell of the woman
who attended my emptiness,
a house in blue light,
the day after Christmas;

only of my nephew,
who left a tiny doll
in my shoes, and said

of Saint Nikolaus:
“He loves you even though
you don’t believe in him.”

Aviva Kasowski’s poetry has appeared in The South Carolina Review, Ninth Letter web edition, the Bellingham Review, and she has a critical review forthcoming in Transmotion. She is a former Bread Loaf work-study scholar and holds a PhD in English and Creative Writing from the University of Georgia. She lives and teaches in the Bay Area.
